Villamar, F..
With the purpose of proving and determining in a short term the impact of the dredged material that can be caused by the organisms that inhabit the marine-estuary ecosystem, was performed toxicity bioassay of the sediment extracted from the bottom of the Salado Estuary. This sediment obstructs the access channels of the Marítime Port of Guayaquil. For this bioassay, was used white shrimp larvae of the species Litopenaeus vannamei, a commercially important organism that depends for its food on the organic detritus coming from the sediment and the column of estuary water in the studied area. The results obtained were analyzed applying the graphic arithmetic method and statistical analysis, through which it was determined that there is a direct relation...

Biology and toxicity of the pufferfish Lagocephalus sceleratus (GMELIN, 1789) from the Gulf of Suez OceanDocs
El-Ganainy, A. A.; Sabrah, M. M.; Zaky, M. A..
Some biological aspects of the pufferfish Lagocephalus sceleratus were studied and correlated with the toxicity of the fish. A sample of 176 fish with total lengths ranging from 18.5 to 78.5 cm were collected from commercial catches at the Attaka fishing harbor between October 2002 and June 2003. Length weight regression parameters for males, females and all individuals were estimated. Modal progression analysis output indicates ten distinct age groups. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy's growth model were L∞ = 81.1 cm and K = 0.26 per year. The overall sex ratio of males to females was 1: 1.3. The spawning takes place during summer and the size at which 50% of fishes are mature is 42.1 cm for males and 43.3 cm for females. Analysis of the diet...

Comparative studies on paralytic shellfish toxin profiles of marine snails, mussels and an Alexandrium tamarense isolate from the Mar del Plata coast (Argentina) OceanDocs
Carreto, J.I.; El Busto, C.; Sancho, H.; Carignan, M.O.; Yasumoto, T.; Oshima, Y..
Toxin composition of three species of marine gastropods Zidona angulata, Adelomedon brasiliana and Pachycymbiola brasiliana and the mussel Mytilus edulis, and an Alexandrium tamarense isolate (AMI)from the Mar del Plata coast, were determined by means of a sensitive and specific HPLC technique. Cultures of A. tamarense contain N-sulfocarbamoyl derivatives as major toxins. The next most abundant components were GTX1 neoSTX and GTX4. As minor components, unusual decarbamoyl toxins were detected. Saxitoxin was the lowest of the 10 detectable toxins. Comparison of toxins profiles revealed significant differences between the toxic composition of the dinoflagellate and that accumulated in the tissues of their primary and secondary consumers. In the mussel M....

Los Bioensayos de Toxicidad en Sedimentos Marinos OceanDocs
Carballo Hondal, O.; Arencibia Carballo, G.; Concepción, J.; Isla Molleda, M..
Many organic and in organic contaminants originated from human activities are deposited and concentrated in aquatic sediments. The purpose of this review article is to analyze and discuss, the objectives, procedures and applications of bioassays on the triad of marine sediments, aiming at a reflection on the possibility of implementing regulations on the environmental monitoring of these studies in our country, so as to improve the environmental quality and its management on coastal zones. The main objective is to highlight the understanding of the adequate application and interpretation of bioassays. A summary of reports is presented, knowledge and analysis concerning marine sediments including, the chemical analysis, the direct determination of...

OceanDocs
Montoya, N.G.; Akselman, R.; Pájaro, M.; Perrotta, R.G.; Carreto, J.I..
Spring blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense in the Argentine sea produce shellfish toxicity through the parallytic shellfish poison (PSP)accumulation. The trace PSP content in the mackerel Scomber japonicus liver was previously demonstrated in the Buenos Aires province coastal region (Carreto et al, 1993a),and a certain capability to accumulate the toxins was suggested. However, it was up to spring 1993 when a great number of PSP intoxicated mackerels where detected for the first time in a wideshelf area off the Buenos Aires province. This area, known as 'El Rincón' (39°00'-40°30'S), has become a growing importance mackerel fishing ground during the last few years. A high PSP concentration was determined in those mackerels, being the...

Carreto, J.I.; Akselman, R.; Cucchi Colleoni, A.D.; Carignan, M.O.; Pájaro, M..
During november 1992 an intense bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense accurred in coastal waters from Mar del Plata, Argentina. Toxicity testing of Mytilus edulis populations of the region revealed high levels of paralytic shellfish poison. In order to study the possible PSP accumulation in mackerel (Scomber japonicus), mouse bioassay(AOAC) was performed in livers from individuals captured during December 1992. Liver extracts were lethal to mice; the sumptoms observed were typical of those caused by paralytic shellfish toxins. Although PSPS concentration is below the established limit for human consumption, it suggests that mackerel can accumulate PSP toxins from its food. On the basis of stomach content analysis of sampled mackerel and...

Arencibia Carballo, G.; Tizol Correa, R. A.; Rodríguez, R. O..
